Growing cauliflower

  • Cauliflower prefers full sun, but can take some shade and still do well, preferring a soil temperature of 55 to 75 deg. F.

  • Space individual plants 12 to 24 inches apart.

  • When planting, add some general purpose fertilizer to the soil.

  • Many varieties of cauliflower that I offer are heat tolerant, but would appreciate protection such as shade cloth during times of extreme heat. Keeping soil evenly moist will also help.

  • To ensure that white cauliflower heads stay white, it helps to tie the inner leaves around the head as it begins to form, or you can break over some inside leaves to shade the head.

PLEASE NOTE: The plants on my farm table have NOT been hardened off. They are straight from the greenhouse.
You can do one of the following:
    1. Expose them gradually to outdoor conditions over a week
    -OR (as I do)-
    2. Plant them immediately and give them protection from excess sun, wind, and rain for a week or two.

Murasaki Fioretto 70 F1

70 days. This dual season, vibrant purple, long-stemmed cauliflower is truly a visual and culinary delight. Murasaki Fioretto 70’s long, tender stems and beautiful purple florets are sweet and mild. Unlike some other purple varieties, these delicious florets maintain their eye-catching color through a wide range of cooking methods, turning fuchsia in vinegar and a rich golden brown when sautéed or roasted. They are also great raw. Plants are compact, early maturing, and heat tolerant while offering great field holding. A stunning purple version of Fioretto with bright purple florets on long stems. You can expect 1.5-2 pounds of stems over a 2-week harvest window. Perfect for the home grower in any climate! F1 hybrid variety. (Territorial Seed)

Amazing

Amazing

75 days. The Patient Cauliflower.

This cauliflower lives up to its name with amazing holding ability in the garden. The huge 10-inch heads, well protected by big wrapper leaves, retain all their flavor and texture over a very long period in the field, so that you can pick just what you need when you need it (why can't all vegetables be this way).

The 10-inch heads are rounded, very dense, and tightly zoned into small florets. Bright ivory beads keep their color well, and the flavor is magnificent crisp, tangy, and full-bodied. The plants are very heavy-bearing, so you can expect a large crop that lasts even longer than you thought possible. Try one season of Amazing and enjoy the difference this holding power makes in your harvest schedule.

Cauliflower is a cool-season crop suitable for spring and fall cultivation. Set the transplants 18 inches apart in the garden. (Park Seed)

Veronica Romanesco cauliflower

Veronica

Romanesco cauliflower
85 days. A fascinating, attractive and nutritious addition to your cauliflower crop, Veronica is just as beautiful as it is delicious. Seven-inch heads are formed from clusters of swirling chartreuse spires. Its taste is a somewhat nuttier cross between broccoli and cauliflower. A crunchy, sweet addition to a raw vegetable platter or cook as you would any cauliflower for a tasty and irresistible treat. F1 hybrid variety. (Territorial Seed)

Here at WILLS FARM, I love love love ‘Veronica’! So beautiful! So delicious! I only consumed it raw as the taste was so amazing I didn’t want to take a chance on ruining it by cooking. (That said, I gave a head of it to someone and they said it was great cooked.) — Sherry
